There shall be appointed by the governor, three directors of the asylum for the insane, who shall be confirmed by the Senate. They shall have the control, direction and management of the said asylums under such regulations as the legislature shall provide and hold their offices for a period of two years. The directors shall have the appointment of the medical superintendent who shall appoint the assistants with the approval of the directors.
